THE COVERS Articles & Editorials May 2008 - Volume 18 Number 5

Driving to an unfamiliar part of town means depending on various methods to get us there, like a map, scribbled directions, or even the position of the sun. It's no different when trying to find our way around the underwater realm. In this month's cover feature, "Lost, Confused or Temporarily Misplaced: Navigation for Novices," author Robert N. Rossier explains how common-sense navigation skills learned on land can transfer to the water.

Lost, Confused or Temporarily Misplaced:
Navigation for Novices
Most people learn to drive before they dive, and, fortunately, a good deal of what is learned from navigating cars along country roads or city streets translates to the underwater world. By taking a closer look at the way we learn to navigate on land, we can draw some important parallels for how we navigate underwater.

Fish Senses, Part One:
The Sense of Smell
Fish use smell for a variety of roles, from locating a mate and finding dinner, to detecting predators, and, perhaps, even for finding their way home. But - and there's always a "but" - fishes' sense of smell may be too sensitive. In fact, you could say that they may not be able to rely on smell, just when they need this sense the most.

Endangered, Threatened or Thriving?:
Exploring the Status of the Florida Manatee
Many feel that conservation efforts have re-established Florida's manatee population so well that the manatee should no longer be considered an endangered species. In fact, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is considering downlisting what is perhaps Florida's most famous resident from its current status of "endangered" to "threatened." But is such a move justified? And if the change occurs, what will it mean to the manatee?
