Dive Land
Park, Alabama
In
north central Alabama near Glencoe, at what some consider the best quarry
diving in the state, Dive Land Park beckons divers with its underwater
moonlike landscape. Above the water, wildlife abounds. Mountain goats can be
seen on the high cliffs surrounding the quarry. A dive center, instruction,
and night diving by appointment are all available.

feet (45 m)
Visibility:
10-30 feet (3-9 m) above the thermocline, and up to 70 feet (21 m) below it.
Water
temperature: 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit (21-26
degrees Celsius) in the summer and in the 40s F (5-9 C)
in the winter. Thermal protection is recommended.
Marine life:
Freshwater jellyfish, bream (brim), bass, catfish and an occasional goldfish
or carp can be found in shallow waters. There are several old boats
scattered around the bottom of the lake, and a semi-trailer but the natural
beauty is promoted at this dive site, with auto-size boulders throughout and
a moonlike landscape at depths below 100 feet (30 m).
Fees: $15 per
day per diver; snorkeling costs $10. Camping sites are available for $6 per
night. Rental gear is available.

Getting there:
From Birmingham, Alabama, or Atlanta, exit Interstate 20 at Exit 185. Take
highways 21/431 north for 6 miles. Follow Highway 431 to the left, and
continue for 17.5 miles. Turn right onto Websters Chapel Road. Dive Land
Park will be four-tenths of one mile on the left.
