Each
day many commuters cross the
Jay
Street
bridge in downtown Lock Haven,

,
unaware of a popular dive site below in the West Branch of the
Susquehanna
River
. It doesn't go down far — only
about 22 feet (7 m) — but the visibility at times exceeds 100 feet (30 m),
proven by divers using a tape measure. The spot accessed from the north side
of the river is a popular training site for area dive shops, and regulars
stage cleanups of the site. A dam is about a quarter-mile away and a boat
dock about one-eighth of a mile downstream.
Underwater explorers
will find the remains of an 80-foot barge dating back to the 1800s, and a
12- to 14-foot boat, as well as boulders, and other treasures. A dive flag
is required, and divers should take care not to block the access road.

feet (18 m)
but divers have
tape-measured
more than 100 feet (30
m).
