Lake Cumberland , Kentucky

Lake Cumberland , in south central Kentucky , was formed by construction of Wolf Creek Dam, which was completed in 1950. The dam was built for flood control, hydroelectric power generation and recreation. The remnants of several small towns still exist. The lake is 101 miles long (162 km), has 1,255 miles (2,008 km) of shoreline and 66,000 surface acres (26,400 hectares). Beaver Creek Marina , on the lake's south side, offers air fills.

Water temperature: Surface temps range from an average of 44 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius) in February to 84 F (29 C) in August.

Aquatic life: Largemouth bass, small mouth bass, white bass, Kentucky bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, walleye, striper bass.

Fees: General admission is free.

On-site amenities: Most amenities can be found in Lake Cumberland State Park , which is on the lake's northwest side. It includes Lake Cumberland State Dock where divers can find lodging, dining, and other services.

Getting there: From Somerset, take the Cumberland Parkway west to U.S. 127 (Exit 62). Drive south on U.S. 127 and take a left on Lake Cumberland State Park Road .
